Regalo Ancestral Blanco Tequila
Regalo Ancestral is a small-label tequila from Ancestral Spirits LLC, made in the Valles, the lowland region around Tequila and Amatitán west of Guadalajara, from 100% blue Weber agave. Lowland agave grown in the Valles' volcanic, iron-rich soil is known for producing a more savory, herbal and mineral tequila than the sweeter, fruitier highland (Los Altos) style, and this blanco is unaged and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) so that character comes through without oak in the way. The Beverage Testing Institute at Tastings.com reviewed it in 2023 and scored it 87 points with a Silver Medal and a Highly Recommended rating, describing an aroma of green herbal and citrus notes, including lime pith, garden herbs, scallion, lemongrass and green mango; a palate that follows the nose with cocoa-dusted lime, mixed greens, lemon pepper and tart pear; and a spicy, complex, warming, dry profile overall. Their summary called it a solid example of a blanco showing the savory herbal side of lowland-grown agave, which is exactly the profile that works in a Margarita, a Paloma or a Ranch Water, where the green pepper and citrus of a Valles blanco cut through lime and grapefruit instead of disappearing behind them.
