Remus Repeal Reserve VII Bourbon Whiskey
Remus Repeal Reserve is the annual limited blend from Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the distillery formerly known as MGP, released each fall to mark the repeal of Prohibition and named for George Remus, the Prohibition-era bootlegger who bought up distilleries and their whiskey certificates. Series VII, the 2023 release, is a straight bourbon medley of five barrel lots from the distillery's two high-rye house mash bills: 6% from 2007 and 26% from 2013 at 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley, plus 26% from 2013 and 21% from 2014 at 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% barley, with the remaining 21% from 2014 on the 75/21/4 bill, so the blend is mostly nine- and ten-year-old bourbon with a slug of sixteen-year-old whiskey for old oak. It is bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV) in a 750ml. Paste Magazine's review found a nose of caramel candies, brown sugar, chocolate-covered cherry and gingerbread spice that opens with time in the glass, a palate of gingerbread, brown butter, caramel corn and cinnamon with dried cherry and faint mocha, and a moderately dry, oak-forward finish.
