Rodney Strong's Limited Blue Label is a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir made in small lots from the Sonoma County appellation known for its fog and cool nights. Recent releases have been aged around 14 months in French oak, with roughly a third of the barrels new. Bottled at 14.5% alcohol, this is a juicy, polished style that leans on blue fruit rather than the typical red cherry. The nose combines blue fruit with hibiscus flowers. On the palate there are juicy blueberries and ripe pomegranate, with subtle oak spice and nutmeg undertones. The mouthfeel is soft and rounded, and the tannins on the finish are lithe and playful rather than grippy. That makes it a flexible dinner wine. Try it with duck confit, beef stroganoff, or a Mediterranean mezze plate with lamb meatballs and hummus. It also works with roast chicken and wild mushroom dishes.
