Rodney Strong has been making wine in Sonoma County since the early 1960s, and its Reserve Pinot Noir is a step up from the regular Russian River bottling. The fruit is sourced entirely from the appellation, where morning fog and cool afternoons give Pinot Noir bright acidity and deep flavor. The wine is made in the small-lot Artisan Cellar, using cluster pre-sorting and extended maceration, then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 78 percent of them new. Bottled at 14.5% alcohol, it shows aromas of ripe red plum and strawberry with floral purple and red notes, and flavors of clove, creamy oak and sweet, spicy rhubarb. The finish is long and balanced, with rose petal notes, youthful tannins and supple acidity. Because of the generous oak and structure, it pairs best with fuller dishes such as roast duck, grilled lamb, mushroom ragu or a seared pork chop. Serve it at cellar temperature, decant for half an hour if you open it young, and expect it to improve with a few years of age. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
