Rodney Strong Vineyards was founded in 1959 by Broadway dancer turned vintner Rod Strong, who was among the first to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in Alexander Valley, and the winery has been family owned by vintner Tom Klein since 1989. Rockaway is its single-vineyard crown jewel, planted in 1994 on a hillside rising to 750 feet in eastern Alexander Valley, where gravelly clay over fractured greywacke sandstone drains sharply and produces small, intensely flavored berries. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels by winemakers Justin Seidenfeld and Olivia Wright, and bottled at 14.5% ABV. The winemaking team describes concentrated dark plum and red currant with tobacco and cedar, earthy minerality balanced by baking spice, and a rich, complex structure that carries to a long finish; it drinks well now with a decant and cellars easily for eight to ten years. Past vintages have earned 93-plus scores from Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator. Serve with cedar-plank ribeye, lamb shanks or wild mushroom pasta. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
