Ron Carúpano has been making rum in the Macarapana Valley outside Carúpano, on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, since Spanish captain Félix del Fierro founded the hacienda in 1762, and the estate, renamed Hacienda Altamira in 1853, is still where Destilería Carúpano operates today. The rums were winning medals at the 1889 Paris Exhibition, and in 2003 the brand was among those recognized under the Ron de Venezuela appellation. Everything is blended by Carmen López de Bastidas, Venezuela's first master blender, using spring water from the Chuare River. Reserva Exclusiva 12 blends rums aged up to twelve years in American oak with some of the distillery's older special reserves, bottled at 40% ABV, and it has a place in the house's history: in 1991 it was chosen in a blind tasting as the first Venezuelan rum exported to Mexico. Published tasting notes describe deep burnt brown sugar, maple and dried fruit, with sultanas, cinnamon, woody spice and a touch of damp oak. The distillery suggests it neat or over ice, and it also works lengthened with tonic or soda and a twist of lemon peel.
