Rutherford Hill AJT Collection Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon
Rutherford Hill was founded in 1972, one of the pioneering Napa houses that proved Bordeaux varieties belonged on the valley's benchlands, and since 1996 it has been owned by the Terlato family, who also carved nearly a mile of aging caves into the hillside above Rutherford. The AJT Collection is named for the late Anthony J. Terlato, the Chicago wine importer who built the family business and championed the estate; it is a small-production Cabernet Sauvignon drawn from Rutherford Hill's estate vineyards in the heart of the Rutherford AVA, where gravelly alluvial soils give the famous "Rutherford dust" character. Winemaker Marisa Taylor ages the wine in French oak barrels, a majority new, for about 20 months before bottling at around 14.5% ABV. The winery describes each vintage as a chance to express the depth of the estate fruit with balance, elegance and poise: ripe black cherry, cassis and plum layered with cocoa, dried sage, vanilla and that dusty, savory mid-palate, carried by supple tannins and a long, velvety finish.
