SAINT CLOUD STRAIGHT BOURBON X-SERIES ABSTRAKT
Saint Cloud is the Kentucky bourbon label founded in 2016 by Ray Walker, the California broker turned Burgundy winemaker whose story was told on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, and the X-Series is where the brand experiments. Abstrakt was Saint Cloud's first wheated Kentucky straight bourbon, made from a sweet mash and pot distilled with Kentucky spring water, then finished in hand-picked charred French oak barrels, a nod to Walker's years working with French oak in Burgundy's cellars. Swapping rye for wheat softens the grain bill and lets the barrel do more of the talking, and the French oak finish adds a layer of toast and spice that American oak alone does not give. The label is a painting by Christopher "Flore" Florentino, the New York artist whose abstract, fluid canvases gave the release its name, and the bottle is as much a piece of art as the whiskey inside. Abstrakt was produced in a single limited edition. It is a bottle for neat sipping and for collectors of art-label bourbon, and once the edition sold through, the X-Series moved on to the Sauternes-finished Abstrakt 2.
