Schug Carneros Pinot Noir
Schug Carneros Estate Winery was founded by Walter Schug, a pioneer of California Pinot Noir, and the winery remains devoted to the grape. This bottling is 100 percent Pinot Noir from Carneros, the cool, fog-swept region that spans southern Napa and Sonoma counties, where afternoon breezes off San Pablo Bay slow ripening. Several vineyard lots are blended together, each adding its own clonal character. Fermentation takes six to eight days in stainless steel punch-down and rotary fermenters, followed by malolactic fermentation in large oak casks and roughly nine months in French oak barrels, about a fifth of them new. Bottled at 14.0% alcohol, it shows Bing cherry, cranberry, rose petal and black tea on the nose. The palate is dry, fresh and juicy, with black cherry, currant and salted plum, plus cocoa, orange peel and cinnamon, and tannins that are present but well integrated. The finish is long and silky with a peppery lift. Pair it with grilled salmon, roast chicken or mushroom risotto. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
