St. George Spirits California Reserve Apple Brandy
St. George's California Reserve Apple Brandy started as a favor. Years ago the Alameda distillery made an unaged apple brandy for Eleven Madison Park in New York — but master distiller Lance Winters and distiller Dave Smith held some back and stashed it in used French and American oak. What emerged became one of the most sought-after and infrequently released spirits in the St. George portfolio. It begins with a true field blend of fresh apples from a family-owned farm in Mendocino County, less than 150 miles from the distillery — Gravenstein, Fall Pippin, Jonathan, McIntosh, Sierra Beauty, Granny Smith, Swaar, Winter Banana, and more. The cider is cold-fermented in stainless steel, then distilled once in a copper pot still with whole fresh apples added directly to the pot — an unusual step that keeps the fruit vivid through the run. Aging happens in a mix of American and French oak that previously held cider, whiskey, and wine, with recent releases blending in older reserve stock held in stainless steel; the 2025 lot spans three to twelve years. Bottled at 43% ABV, vintage-dated. Expect dry cider, baking spice, crisp green apple, and lemon meringue on the nose, opening into apple pie and clover honey with amaretto-cookie nuttiness, finishing on sage, clove, and jasmine. Wine & Spirits called it fall in a glass. Neat, or in a serious Jack Rose.
