St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

St-Germain is the bottle that revived the entire liqueur category — the New York Times credited it with almost single-handedly invigorating a moribund shelf, and bartenders nicknamed it "bartender's ketchup" because it improves nearly everything. It was created by Robert Cooper, a third-generation distiller who struck out on his own after his father dismissed the idea (and told him he'd hire him back when he failed). Launched in 2007, it won Best of Show at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition that first year, plus Grand Gold at Monde Selection five times. Production is genuinely seasonal: wild elderflower blossoms are hand-picked in the French Alps and Savoie over a three-to-four-week window each spring, often carried by bicycle to collection points so the delicate petals aren't crushed, then macerated in grape eau-de-vie and sweetened with cane sugar. Around a thousand blossoms go into every bottle, and the golden color comes from the pollen — no coloring added. Each bottle carries the harvest year. Bottled at 20% ABV.
