Schlichte Steinhäger Dry Gin
Schlichte Steinhäger is the original juniper spirit of Steinhagen in Westphalia, Germany, a protected style that predates modern gin and whose recipe traces back to the 15th century. Made by Schwarze & Schlichte, one of Germany's oldest distilling families, it is triple-distilled from neutral wheat spirit with fresh juniper berries and comes in a traditional earthenware jug, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).
Steinhäger is deliberately "schlicht," plain and unadorned: a remarkably smooth, clean juniper spirit with a gentle bitterness and none of the botanical fireworks of a contemporary gin. The Gin Is In found it works surprisingly well in mixed drinks, especially a Gimlet where the bitter juniper finish plays off sweet lime cordial, and in a Negroni. In Germany it is sipped ice-cold as a schnapps, often alongside a beer. A piece of gin history at a very friendly price.
