Suave Joven Tequila
Suave is an organic tequila brand founded in 2014 and made at NOM 1522 in the Tequila Valley of Jalisco under master distiller Jaime Villalobos Sauza, from single-estate blue Weber agave grown without synthetic fertilizers; the line is certified organic, kosher and non-GMO with no additives, sweeteners, aromas or colors. The piñas are cooked in high-pressure autoclaves, crushed on a roller mill, fermented in stainless steel and double distilled in stainless pot stills with copper coils. The Joven, labeled 42S for its strength, is a blended tequila: batches of the house's aged and unaged spirit married together and bottled at 42% ABV (84 proof), slightly above the rest of the line. Because Suave adds nothing back, the joven's color and barrel character come only from the aged component rather than caramel. Tequila Matchmaker reviewers scored it in the low 90s, describing noticeable barrel character balanced by roasted agave and fresh-baked bread, a finish of caramel, cinnamon and light oak sweetness, and a touch of pleasant bitterness at the end. It keeps the blanco's agave bite while borrowing the añejo's warmth, which makes it unusually good in a stirred drink like a tequila Manhattan.
