Tanduay Asian Silver is the white rum from Tanduay Distillers, the Manila rum house founded in 1854 that calls itself the second-largest-selling rum brand in the world, built almost entirely on the strength of its home market in the Philippines. The brand reached the United States for the first time in the summer of 2013, launching in South Florida through importer Midway USA, with Silver and Gold as the two opening expressions at a suggested $19.99 a bottle. Tanduay's rums are distilled from Negros sugarcane, grown on Negros Island in the central Philippines, in a five-column process, and each expression is blended from a set of individually aged rums rather than bottled straight off the still. Asian Silver is a blend of rums aged up to five years in charred oak barrels, then blended and filtered back to clear, and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml bottle, so it carries more barrel character than a typical unaged white rum. The distillery describes the flavor as coconut with hints of custard. It is built for mixing: daiquiris, mojitos, rum and Coke, or a Filipino-style rum and calamansi.
