Tanduay Gold is the aged everyday rum from Tanduay Distillers, the Manila rum house founded in 1854 that calls itself the second-largest-selling rum brand in the world, built almost entirely on the strength of its home market in the Philippines. The brand reached the United States for the first time in the summer of 2013, launching in South Florida through importer Midway USA with Gold and Silver as its two opening expressions at a suggested $19.99 a bottle. Tanduay's rums are distilled from Negros sugarcane, grown on Negros Island in the central Philippines and descended, the company says, from cane varieties that have been cultivated in Asia since the first millennium BC, in a five-column process, and each expression is blended from a set of individually aged rums. Gold is a blend of rums aged up to seven years and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml bottle, which gives it more age than most gold rums at the price. The distillery describes the flavor as vanilla and tropical fruit. It sips fine on the rocks, but it is really a mixing rum: rum and Coke, a dark-and-stormy style pour with ginger beer, or a rum punch.
