Teerenpeli Portti Finnish Single Malt Whisky comes from Teerenpeli Distillery in Lahti, Finland, one of the Nordic countries' pioneering malt whisky producers. Portti is distilled from 87% Finnish pilsner malt and 13% heavily peated malt, giving a gentle 5 ppm of peat, using barley grown within 95 miles of the distillery and water filtered through the Salpausselkä esker, a gravel ridge left by the ice age. It is double distilled in Scottish-made copper pot stills built to Teerenpeli's own design.
Portti is aged first in ex-bourbon casks, then finished in first-fill Port wine casks, and the casks are stored outdoors in shipping containers where Finnish winters plunge to 30 below and summers reach 85 degrees, with no artificial heating or cooling, a climate that builds unusual complexity. The result is a creamy, malty whisky with a hint of peat and the dark fruit of the Port, and it earned 93 points from the IWSC. It is fun to taste beside Teerenpeli's Kaski, made identically but aged in sherry casks. A rare Finnish malt for the world-whisky explorer.
