Tepanal Ancestral Mexicano Mezcal
Tepanal is the clay-pot mezcal of Rafael García Aragón, a mezcalero in Santa María Sola de Vega, the Oaxacan district that made clay-pot distillation famous. The brand launched in 2020 with his son Jair and partner Antonio Avendaño, and the name comes from Tepanaltepec, "hill of honeycombs," for the honey once harvested in these hills. The process is old-school throughout: agave roasted in an earthen pit, fermented five to seven days in cypress tanks with wild airborne yeast, and double distilled in small clay pots. Agave Mexicano (Agave rhodacantha) is a broad-leafed, slow-growing agave that mezcaleros prize for its high sugar content and the sweet, herbal, fruit-driven spirit it makes. It's nowhere near as common as espadín, which is why single-agave Mexicano bottlings are worth grabbing when they show up. Clay-pot distillation layers minerals and earth over that natural sweetness.
