Tequila Plantador Gold is the Vivanco family's 100% agave gold tequila from Destilería El Ranchito (NOM 1414) in Arandas, in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, the distillery behind Viva México, made under maestro tequilero Sergio Cruz as part of the family's more accessible Plantador label. Unlike the caramel-colored mixto golds that give the category a bad name, this is a true 100% agave tequila with nothing added: the base is the house blanco, made from estate-grown Blue Weber agave matured six to eight years, roasted at least 26 hours in brick ovens with culinary steam, crushed on a roller mill, open-fermented five to eight days in stainless steel with proprietary and Caribbean rum yeasts and deep well water, and distilled twice in copper pot stills. A small amount of reposado is blended into that blanco to give it a light touch of barrel character, similar to a joven, and it is bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle with the pale straw color coming from the reposado share alone. Expect the cooked agave, pepper and citrus of the Plantador Blanco softened by a hint of vanilla and oak, which makes it the gold to reach for in a Margarita, a Tequila Sunrise or a shot with lime and salt.
