The Botanist Islay Dry Gin Distiller's Strength is the high-proof expression of Islay's only dry gin, made at Bruichladdich Distillery on the west coast of Scotland. Like the original, it starts with a neutral grain spirit and a bill of 31 botanicals: nine classic gin botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica, orris root, cassia, cinnamon, liquorice, lemon peel and orange peel, plus 22 wild botanicals hand-foraged on Islay such as gorse flower, heather, apple mint, bog myrtle, sweet cicely, meadowsweet, lemon balm, wild thyme and water mint. Everything is slow-distilled in Bruichladdich's Lomond still, nicknamed Ugly Betty, over roughly 17 hours, then bottled unaged at 50% ABV (100 proof) instead of the standard 46%. The higher strength, built with bartenders in mind, carries more botanical oil and a weightier texture. Tasting notes from the producer run to fresh juniper and green pine with lemon zest, apple mint and herbal gorse on the nose; juniper, meadow herbs, wildflower honey and citrus peel with warm root spice on the palate; and a long finish of mint, bright citrus and a mineral edge. It holds its shape in a Martini or Negroni and makes a muscular Gin and Tonic with a light, dry tonic. 750ml.
