Tolosa Winery was founded in 1998 in the Edna Valley, a cool, ocean-influenced valley whose soils come from an ancient seabed. The 1772 name honors the year Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded. The 1772 Pinot Noir is built on fruit from the estate Edna Ranch, which has six vineyard sections and about 60 soil types. Grapes are hand-harvested and optically sorted, fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks and aged for about nine months in a mix of new and neutral French oak. The aim is to show tension and acidity that reflect Edna Valley's cool climate. Bottled at 14.2% alcohol, the wine is medium-bodied, with ripe cherry, plum and strawberry fruit alongside black olive, peppercorn and a touch of toast. It shows exceptional balance, and a long, layered finish rounds it out. Tannins soften with a little age, so it can be enjoyed now or held for a few years. Serve it with roast chicken, grilled pork chops, mushroom pasta or a plate of charcuterie and aged cheese. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
