Tolosa is a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialist from Edna Valley, and its 1772 series, named for the year of the San Luis Obispo mission's founding, includes bottlings from other cool California regions. This one comes from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County, a long bench of vineyards above the Salinas Valley floor that gets strong Pacific wind each afternoon, leading to small berries, thick skins and focused Pinot Noir. Bottled at 13.8% alcohol, the wine is medium-bodied and lively, with rhubarb, cranberry and cherry flavors and hints of leather, fennel and tea. The acidity is bright and the tannins are moderate, which lends a savory, food-friendly quality that is less sweet and plush than many warmer-region Pinots. It pairs well with seared duck breast, roasted pork loin, grilled salmon, herb-roasted chicken or mushroom risotto. Serve it lightly cooled, around 60 degrees, and let it breathe briefly in the glass. If you like Pinot Noir with a tart red fruit profile and a bit of earthy complexity, this bottle is worth a try, and it should hold well for a few more years. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
