Toro Alteño is a value reposado from Los Altos de Jalisco, the highland tequila region where the red volcanic soil and cooler nights around Arandas, Jesús María and Tepatitlán produce larger, sweeter agave than the Tequila Valley below. The brand has been bottled at two distilleries over its life, both in the southern Highlands: Productos Finos de Agave, NOM 1416, a family-owned distillery in Jesús María that produces a long list of third-party brands, and more recently Envasadora de Productos Líderes, NOM 1592, which is the NOM listed on current bottles in the Tequila Matchmaker database. As a reposado it is rested in American oak for at least the two months the Tequila Regulatory Council requires, long enough to take on a pale straw color and a little vanilla from the wood while leaving the cooked-agave character of a blanco mostly intact. The producer does not publish a mash process or tasting notes, and reviews are mixed, so treat it the way the price suggests: a margarita, paloma and ranch-water tequila for the week rather than a sipper, and an easy way to taste highland reposado without spending highland money.
