Victor Bergeron opened his first Oakland pub in the early 1930s and became "Trader Vic," the man who invented the Mai Tai in 1944 and effectively built American Tiki culture around it. The brand has spent more than 80 years crafting rums and liqueurs for people who mix at home, and this amaretto is one of its most versatile staples: an almond liqueur inspired by the Italian tradition but built with Trader Vic's own tropical sensibility, bottled at 26.5% ABV (53 proof) and a Silver Medal winner at the 2007-2008 World Beverage Competition. The distillery's own notes highlight pleasant vanilla bean layered into a sweet, nutty character, and reviewers consistently describe a big, generous almond nose with real richness on the palate — sweet, smooth, and velvety, with vanilla and light caramel rounding it out. It's the backbone of a proper Amaretto Sour, a natural in Godfathers, Toasted Almonds, and coffee drinks, and holds up well simply poured over ice. It also earns its keep in the kitchen, where it's genuinely excellent in tiramisu, cakes, and dessert sauces. Approachable, affordable, and a legitimate home-bar workhorse from one of the most important names in cocktail history.
