Victor Bergeron opened Hinky Dink's in Oakland in 1932 with a potbelly stove and $700, renamed it Trader Vic's by 1936, and invented the Mai Tai there in 1944 — introducing it to Hawaii in the 1950s and exporting Polynesian drinking culture to the world. The Trader Vic's rum line exists to carry that legacy behind the home bar, and the Coconut expression is built for exactly one job: tropical drinks where bright coconut should do the lifting. It's a Caribbean rum base bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV), notably higher-strength than the coconut liqueurs it usually shares a shelf with, which means it actually contributes rum backbone to a drink rather than just sweetness. The distillery describes a buttery coconut aroma with a sweet, creamy palate finishing on clean, pleasant coconut. Worth being upfront: reception varies — some drinkers find the coconut natural and well-integrated, while at least one reviewer found it comparatively subtle, closer to sweetened coconut water than an aggressive tropical punch. That restraint is arguably the point in a Piña Colada, Painkiller, or frozen rum cocktail, where an overpowering coconut can flatten everything else. An affordable, functional tiki-bar workhorse from the brand that started it all.
