Trader Vic's Macadamia Nut Liqueur
Victor Bergeron opened a small Oakland pub called Hinky Dinks in 1932 with a potbelly stove and $700; by 1936 he'd become "Trader Vic," and his bar had become the cornerstone of American Tiki culture — and in 1944 he invented the Mai Tai, arguably the most important rum cocktail ever created, introducing it to Hawaii in the 1950s. This macadamia nut liqueur carries that legacy, flavored with Hawaiian macadamias and bottled at 26.5% ABV (53 proof) in a heavy decanter-style bottle with a glass stopper. Difford's Guide describes a clear golden amber pour with a buttery, nutty, almost popcorn-like nose, opening into a sweet, syrupy palate of macadamia and zesty mandarin orange with buttery vanilla, finishing bittersweet with lingering citrus. Professor Cocktail rated it a full 5 out of 5, praising the toasted-nut aroma and silky texture that belies the proof. It's genuinely one of the few macadamia liqueurs on the market, and it shines in Tiki drinks — a natural in Mai Tai riffs, Painkillers, and coconut-forward cocktails — but also works beautifully neat over ice, stirred into coffee, or paired with vanilla ice cream and chocolate desserts. Trader Vic's own suggestion: mix it with their chocolate liqueur and a splash of milk.
