Tres Agaves was founded in 2008 by Barry Augus, who started out selling agave nectar from his minivan in the San Francisco Bay Area before shipping his first case of tequila in 2010. Trinchero Family Estates, the Napa Valley wine family, took over sales and distribution in a 2012 joint venture, and in 2019 the brand opened its own distillery, Tequilera TAP, NOM 1614, in Amatitán in the Tequila Valley of Jalisco, on land bought from the Partida family, who had made the tequila for years at their own facility. Iliana Partida, a fourth-generation agave grower and distiller, runs production as Maestra Tequilera. The distillery cooks 100% blue Weber agave in an autoclave, crushes it on a four-stage roller mill, ferments in shallow stainless steel tanks without fibers and double distills in copper-coil pot stills; the lineup went organic when the new distillery opened, with nothing added. The Añejo rests 18 months in used American white oak, mostly barrels that previously held Tennessee whiskey and Kentucky bourbon, and is bottled at 40% ABV. The brand describes it as rich with caramel, oak and vanilla, built for sipping, a strong value in organic, additive-free añejo.
