Wakashio Distillery 424 Gin
Wakashio Shuzo has been distilling in Kagoshima, Japan since 1968, when five local shochu producers joined forces as a cooperative — and that deep well of shochu-making know-how is exactly what makes 424 Gin unique. It's reportedly the only craft gin in the world made using a kamejiru, a traditional wooden pot still normally reserved for shochu production, which lends a softer, rounder mouthfeel than copper alone can achieve. The base is a blend of several types of sweet potato (imo) shochu, redistilled with botanicals and finished with a touch of distillate from a small copper still to bridge tradition with more contemporary gin character. This Classic Botanicals expression builds on juniper with four botanicals borrowed straight from the London Dry tradition — coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, and cardamom. The result carries a genuine gin backbone layered over the distinct depth of sweet potato shochu, finishing on an elegant, dry note from the orris root. It's a gin that rewards curiosity: try it in a simple gin and tonic to let the shochu character show through, or sip it neat to appreciate the wooden-still texture.
