XM Royal 10 Year Old is the flagship rum of Banks DIH, the Georgetown, Guyana beverage company whose initials stand for Demerara Ice House; the XM stands for Extra Mature. Banks DIH is a blender rather than a distiller, and its rums are built from molasses-based spirit sourced from Central and South America, which is why the bottle is labeled Finest Caribbean Rum rather than Demerara rum. The blend is aged at least nine and a half years in ex-bourbon casks, then married and given a further six months in sherry butts before bottling at 40% ABV (80 proof) under a natural cork. Difford's Guide found a clear amber color, a nose of gingerbread, orange juice, tropical fruit, banana and tinned pineapple, a honeyed palate of dried pineapple, banana and mango with sherry, Madeira, bitter chocolate and coffee from the finish, and a long, lingering end; The Fat Rum Pirate found caramel, raisin and dried fruit, a little spice and a dry, faintly smoky finish. It is a sipping rum at a mixing-rum price, and it also makes a very good rum and cola.
