Amrut 8 Years Old Little Greedy Angels Chairman's Reserve Single Malt Whisky
Greedy Angels is Amrut's answer to the angels' share — an eight-year Indian single malt in a climate where the angels take 11% a year, so eight years leaves a fraction of the cask — the Chairman's Reserve at 50%. Amrut was founded in 1948 and launched India's first single malt in Glasgow in 2004; the distillery sits at 3,000 feet in Bangalore, where the tropical climate matures whisky three times faster than Scotland, and where an eight-year cask is a rarity because so little survives. Greedy Angels launched in 2013 for the chairman's sixtieth birthday and has appeared in tiny annual runs since; this edition is eight-year unpeated Indian barley from ex-bourbon oak, bottled at 50% without chill filtration or color. The house notes: honeyed malt, dried fruit, and oak on the nose; vanilla, caramel, and spice woven through the malt's sweetness on a rich, velvety palate; and a long, warm finish. Expect what eight tropical years give — the equivalent of a twenty-plus-year Scotch in depth: dense honey, dried apricot, toffee, old oak, and a long, waxy finish. Honest note: the oldest Amrut most people will see and one of the scarcest — for the world-whisky collector, the age chaser, and the gift for someone who thinks they've had everything. Neat, in a Glencairn. Greedy Angels, eight years.
