Amrut Fusion is the whisky that put India on the map — Jim Murray scored it 97 in 2010 and called it the third-best whisky in the world — 75% Indian barley and 25% peated Scottish barley, aged in Bangalore heat, bottled at 50%. Amrut was founded in 1948 and launched India's first single malt in Glasgow in 2004, daring the Scots to taste it; the distillery sits at 3,000 feet in Bangalore, where the tropical climate matures whisky three times faster than Scotland and the angels take 11% a year, so a four-year Amrut drinks like a twelve. Fusion is a marriage of unpeated Indian six-row barley and peated Scottish barley, distilled separately, aged around four years in ex-bourbon and new charred oak, and bottled at 50% without chill filtration or color. The Whiskey Jug, 4 out of 5: vanilla, butterscotch, and cane sugar into lemon and tropical fruit on the nose; smoky anise, black coffee, creamy orange, and candied malt on the palate; and a finish of dark fruit, leather, green apple, and coriander — bold without pummeling. WhiskyRant and Connosr's hundreds of reviews agree it's the benchmark Indian malt. Honest note: the bottle that made world whisky a category — for the peat-curious, the Scotch drinker who thinks they've tasted everything, and the best-value 50% malt on the shelf. Neat, with water. Fusion, India meets Islay.
