Amrut Portonova Indian Single Malt Whisky
Portonova is Amrut's port-pipe sandwich — Indian single malt aged in new American oak and ex-bourbon, moved into Portuguese port pipes, then back into bourbon casks, bottled at 61.2% — and Jim Murray's tasting note called it a thick pudding of a nose, burnt apple pie, jammy fruit through caramel. Amrut was founded in 1948 and launched India's first single malt in Glasgow in 2004; the distillery sits at 3,000 feet in Bangalore, where the tropical climate matures whisky three times faster than Scotland. Portonova is unpeated Indian barley, distilled in copper pots, aged in new American oak and ex-bourbon barrels, finished in port pipes, returned to bourbon wood, and bottled at cask strength — 61.2% — without chill filtration or color. The tasting note on the bottle: a thick pudding of a nose, fruit and caramel merged, burnt apple pie; a port-pipe sandwich of spicy, jammy fruit through caramel with oaky saltiness that makes the mouth salivate and pucker; and a long finish of massive oak, cocoa, and muscovado sugar supplanting the berries. The Whiskey Wash: rich dark fruit, cherry, raisin, deep oak spice. Honest note: the dessert Amrut — huge, sweet, oaky, cask-strength port-finished malt from a tropical warehouse — for the sherry-bomb drinker who wants something bigger, and the collector. Neat, with water, after dinner. Portonova.
