Bourbon & Banter's verdict on El Mayor Añejo: an aged tequila for $30 — go get a bottle. El Mayor is four generations of González distillers in Arandas: master distiller Rodolfo runs Destiladora González Lux, NOM 1603, in the Los Altos highlands with his son Paul and daughter Graciela, growing estate agave at 7,500 feet in sandy, mineral soil; Luxco distributes it, which is why it's priced like a house brand and made like an estate one. The Añejo is 100% estate-grown highland blue Weber agave, fermented with the family yeast, double-distilled in stainless pots with copper coils, aged at least eighteen months in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled at 40% ABV. Bourbon & Banter: very smooth, a much longer finish than the Blanco and Reposado, roasted agave and buttery caramel, extremely approachable — their favorite of the line. Agave Spirits Journey: sweet cooked agave, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, white pepper, and spiced red fruit and dates. Tequila.net's reviewer, tired of expensive añejos with a peppery bite, was shocked at the smoothness and made it his number one. Long Island Lou was pleasantly surprised for the price. Honest note: the best bottle in the line by every reviewer's count, and one of the best sub-$40 añejos in the store. Neat, on the rocks, or an Old Fashioned. The González family's añejo.
