Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, distilled in Gascony since the 14th century, three hundred years before cognac. Unlike cognac it is usually distilled once in a continuous column still to a lower strength, which keeps more of the grape and produces a richer, more rustic spirit that rewards long aging in Gascon oak. The finest come from the sandy Bas-Armagnac, with structured, spicy brandies from the Ténarèze, and many houses release single vintages, making Armagnac the classic birth-year gift.
