Aberfeldy 18 is the honeyed Highland malt finished four to five months in Pauillac casks — red Bordeaux from the Cabernet-dominant commune — and Drinkhacker graded it A- for wine-driven berry and plum over nougat and honeycomb. John Dewar's sons built the distillery in 1898 on the Pitilie Burn, a stream that once carried flecks of gold, to anchor their blends; Bacardi owns it now, and the 18 Year is matured eighteen years in refill casks, then finished four to five months in casks that held Pauillac Bordeaux, and bottled at 43% ABV. Drinkhacker: toasty and brooding, dark brown sugar and caramel-covered cookies on the nose; wine-driven berry and plum with cereal notes revealing nougat and honeycomb on the palate; and a tannic, drying finish. Nice Sipper and The Right Spirit both find the Cabernet as red fruit and structure rather than sweetness. Expect the Aberfeldy honey underneath a layer of blackcurrant, plum, and wine tannin, with a dry, elegant finish. Honest note: Bordeaux-finished Scotch is rare and this is one of the few done at real age — for the claret drinker crossing into whisky, the Aberfeldy collector, and the dinner-party bottle.
