Benriach The Smoky Ten is a rare thing: a peated Speyside single malt. Benriach broke with regional convention in the 1970s by malting barley over Highland peat, and today the Elgin distillery, founded in 1898 and now owned by Brown-Forman, still runs a short annual "smoke season." The Smoky Ten marries peated and unpeated spirit aged at least ten years in bourbon barrels, Jamaican rum casks and toasted virgin oak.
Bottled at 92 proof, it leads with sweet, aromatic smoke rather than Islay medicinal peat: melon, crisp apple and burnt sugar on the nose, then sun-ripened fruit, sweet cream, baking spice and a saline edge, finishing sweet and smoky with toasted oak. The Whiskey Wash rated it 3.5 out of 5 and found it opens up with a splash of water. A gentle, fruit-driven introduction to peated whisky.
