Bladnoch Vinaya Lowland Single Malt Scotch
Bladnoch Vinaya is the entry-level single malt from Scotland's southernmost distillery, founded in 1817 by the McClelland brothers near Wigtown in the Lowlands. After closing in 2014, Bladnoch was bought by Australian entrepreneur David Prior, rebuilt almost from scratch and restarted in 2017 under master distiller Dr. Nick Savage. Vinaya, from the Sanskrit for "respect and gratitude," honors that revival.
A marriage of first-fill bourbon barrels and first-fill sherry casks, bottled at 93.4 proof, non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, Vinaya pours pale gold and offers brown sugar, honey, butterscotch, sultana and almond on the nose. The palate balances sweet dried fruit with grassy Lowland cereal, cinnamon and gingerbread spice, finishing with hazelnut and orange oil.
