Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is the Brown-Forman distillery's twice-barreled bourbon, made at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, and it is the one expression in the range built around the barrel rather than the grain. Fully matured Woodford Reserve bourbon is taken out of its first charred oak barrel and finished in a second, new barrel that has been deeply toasted before a light charring, a treatment that pulls more of the wood's sugars and spice into the whiskey than a standard heavy char would. It comes out at 90.4 proof (45.2% ABV) with a deep amber color. The distillery's own notes call for rich dark fruit, caramel, sharp honey, chocolate, marzipan and toasted oak on the nose, a full-bodied palate of vanilla, dark caramel, hazelnut, apple, fruit and spice, and a long, creamy finish that holds onto honeyed apple. It took Double Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It drinks best neat or with a single large cube, and the extra oak and sweetness make it a natural in an Old Fashioned where the usual bourbon disappears behind the sugar.
