Darioush Khaledi, a Shiraz-born entrepreneur who built a Southern California grocery empire, founded Darioush in 1997 and made its Persian-inspired Silverado Trail estate a Napa landmark. Caravan is the winery's second Cabernet, made by winemaker Hope Goldie from the same estate and partner vineyards that feed the Signature bottling, and it is one of the better-kept secrets in Napa for the money. The current release blends 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 11% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Malbec, aged 22 months in French oak, 60% new and 40% neutral. That regime gives a plush, expansive wine: blackberry compote and fresh black cherry on the nose with cardamom, dried lavender and a hint of forest floor, then a round, richly textured mid-palate, fine integrated tannins and a long, polished finish with quiet spice. It is built in the house style of its big sibling, opulent yet balanced, and will reward five to ten years in the cellar. Pair with lamb kebabs, herb-crusted rack of lamb or a well-marbled ribeye. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
