Founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, Heitz Cellar ushered in Napa Valley's modern era and produced the valley's first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon with Martha's Vineyard in 1966. Trailside Vineyard, an 85-acre site on the eastern Rutherford bench between the Silverado Trail and Conn Creek, joined the estate in 1984 and debuted as a designate with the 1989 vintage, giving Heitz a third single-vineyard flagship alongside Martha's and Bella Oaks. The 1999 is a library-era bottling from the Joe and David Heitz years, made in the classic house style: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged more than three years in oak, including the long stint in large casks that defines Heitz, and bottled at around 14% ABV in 750ml, presented here in its wood box. After a quarter century it shows what Rutherford Cabernet does with age: cassis and dried cherry folded into cedar, tobacco, vanilla and the signature dusty earth, with resolved tannins and a long, savory finish; CellarTracker reviewers rate it in the mid-90s and expect another decade or more of life. Decant gently and serve with prime rib. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
