The Calling Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The Calling launched in 2012 as a partnership between broadcaster Jim Nantz and Peter Deutsch of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, built around the idea of following your calling. Winemaker James MacPhail, who made his name with Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley, works directly with long-term family growers in Alexander Valley, where hills block the coastal fog and the Russian River leaves well-drained gravelly soils that suit Cabernet. The 2022 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon: hand-sorted, gently crushed, fermented on native yeast, given extended maceration to soften the tannins, then aged 18 months in French oak, half of it new, and bottled at 14.0% ABV. MacPhail describes a deep cherry-red wine with blackberry, blackcurrant, toasted spice, vanilla and dark chocolate on the nose, then ripe blackberry pie, black pepper, cinnamon and freshly roasted coffee on a palate with strong but silky tannins and a long finish. Pour it with grilled lamb, a peppercorn-crusted steak or braised oxtail. 750ml bottle. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
