Meukow traces its roots to 1850, when brothers Auguste-Christophe and Gustav Meukow were sent from Silesia to France by Tsar Alexander II to supply the Russian court with cognac; they founded A.C. Meukow in the town of Cognac on August 1, 1862. Since 1979 the house has belonged to the Coste family's Compagnie de Guyenne, and in 1993 Michel Coste introduced the Felin bottle with the panther that remains the brand's emblem. Cellar master Anne Sarteaux, one of the few women in that role in Cognac, has overseen the blends since 2007. Meukow VS is built mainly on Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie, chosen for their richness and floral complexity, rounded out with Fins Bois and Bons Bois. Double distilled from Ugni Blanc and aged a minimum of two years in French oak, it is bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. The house describes a shining gold color with copper tints and a profile balanced between fruity roundness and woody delicacy, with notes of almond, candied orange, licorice and nutmeg. Supple enough to sip neat, it is also a strong base for a Sidecar or French 75.
