Meukow VSOP Superior Cognac
Meukow was founded in Cognac in 1862 by Silesian brothers Auguste-Christophe and Gustav Meukow, originally charged by Tsar Alexander II with supplying the Russian court; the house has been owned by the Coste family's Compagnie de Guyenne since 1979 and has worn its signature panther since the Felin bottle debuted in 1993. VSOP Superior is blended by cellar master Anne Sarteaux from eaux-de-vie drawn mainly from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, with Fins Bois and Bons Bois adding roundness. Double distilled from Ugni Blanc in copper pot stills and matured in French oak for a minimum of four years, well above the legal VSOP floor, it is bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle. Falstaff scored it 92 points in its 2024 Spirits Special, noting a very fruity nose with fine notes of raisin, dried flowers, wood and a little nut, a complex, smooth palate of dried fruit and peach with a hint of savory sweetness, and a gentle, well-balanced finish that lingers. The house positions it as its aperitif-and-cocktail workhorse, equally good neat, over ice or in a stirred drink.
