Meukow XO sits at the top of the house's core range and arrives in a presentation gift box around the panther-embossed Felin bottle that Michel Coste introduced in 1993. The house dates to 1862, when brothers Auguste-Christophe and Gustav Meukow, sent from Silesia by Tsar Alexander II to source cognac for the Russian court, founded A.C. Meukow; it joined the Coste family's Compagnie de Guyenne in 1979, and cellar master Anne Sarteaux has composed its blends since 2007. The XO combines long-aged eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne with Fins Bois and Bons Bois, double distilled from Ugni Blanc and matured in French oak for a minimum of ten years, the legal XO requirement, with older reserves in the blend. Bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle, it shows a fiery mahogany color. Meukow describes a fruity head of candied orange and prune, an intense heart of almond and hazelnut, and a powerful background of chocolate and leather, balancing the firm tannins of long oak aging against delicate sweetness.
