Don Q takes its name from Don Quijote, the hero of Cervantes' classic novel, and it's genuinely the best-selling rum in its home country of Puerto Rico, made by the Serrallés family since 1865 using a copper pot still originally imported from France and water drawn from the Rio Inabon. The range runs remarkably wide: Cristal, the clean, mixable white at the entry point; Reserva 7, a 92-point aged blend overseen by master blender Jaiker Soto; Gran Reserva XO, blending 9-to-12-year rum with solera-aged stock up to 50 years old, bottled with no added sugar; flavored expressions like Limón and Coco; a notably high-proof Spiced Rum built to actually showcase its spices; an overproof 151; and a genuinely experimental Double Cask series finished in Port, Sherry, Vermouth (specifically Mancino casks), and Pedro Ximénez sherry barrels. Sixth-generation Maestro Ronero Roberto Serrallés and master blender Silvia Santiago — Puerto Rico's first certified female Master Blender — lead much of the innovation behind the newer releases. Reviews across the lineup are genuinely mixed to excellent depending on the bottle, but the range rewards real exploration.
