Flor de Caña is a fifth-generation family distillery in Nicaragua, founded in 1890 at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano, and the Eco 15 is its sustainability statement bottled. The credentials are real and independently certified: Carbon Neutral and Fair Trade Certified, distilled using 100% renewable energy, with the bottle, label, and case made from recycled materials — and the company has planted 50,000 trees annually since 2005. The rum itself is aged 15 years in ex-bourbon barrels without rotation, with no added sugar or artificial ingredients, in volcanic soil terroir. Expect an intense copper pour with caramelized sugar, toasted oak, vanilla, nutmeg, Jamaican pepper, and hazelnut on the nose, opening into an opulent, viscous, dry palate of toffee, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and baking spice, finishing long and elegant with oak spice and subtle molasses. Reviewers describe it as clean, unfussy rum with no frills — genuinely enjoyable, though several note it drinks close enough to the 12 Year that the price gap is debatable.
