Frank August Case Study 02 XO PX Brandy Cask Finished Bourbon Whiskey
Frank August is a Kentucky straight bourbon house co-founded by CEO Johnathan Crocker, and its Case Study series is where it takes barrels from its bourbon library and runs one finishing experiment per release; Case Study 01 took a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Case Study 02 went into ten rare brandy casks with an unusually long history. They were first filled in 1992 with very old Pedro Ximénez brandy and held it for 17 years, then were emptied and immediately refilled with extra-old Pedro Ximénez dating to 1948 for another 13 years, so each cask had spent three decades soaking up PX before the bourbon ever touched it. Frank August tasted the finishing barrels every 30 days, for an undisclosed stretch, until each one reached the profile the team wanted, and each batch draws on no more than 10 to 15 barrels. It's bottled at 50.5% ABV (101 proof). The brand's notes describe baked peaches and dark chocolate on the nose, then allspice and oak; the palate enters sweet, builds spice, and brings fruit and brown sugar with a rich, warming texture, the brandy present but restrained.
