Frank August Case Study 04 4x Oaked Proofed in Barrel Double Oaked Bourbon
Frank August is a Kentucky bourbon brand known for its minimalist packaging and its Case Study series, a run of limited releases that each test one specific idea in how whiskey is made. Case Study 04 takes on double oaking, the technique of moving mature whiskey into a second, freshly charred new oak barrel for extra depth. This release blends a double-oaked bourbon with a double-oaked rye, which Frank August calls a four-oak aging process. The twist is in the proofing. Most whiskey is cut to bottling strength in stainless steel tanks just before bottling, but here the water was added while the whiskey was still in the barrel, bringing it down to 95 proof, and the reduced whiskey then rested in oak for another year or more so the water and wood could integrate. The whiskey was about six and a half years old at release, and it is bottled at 95 proof (47.5% ABV). Published notes describe a deep amber color with toasted oak, vanilla, caramel and dark chocolate, backed by cinnamon, nutmeg and black pepper from the rye. A limited release, best sipped neat.
