Amrut Barrel Aged Gin

Amrut is India's most celebrated single malt distillery — Jim Murray named its Fusion the third-best whisky in the world in 2010 — and this is what happens when that house makes gin and then puts it in its own whisky casks. The base is Nilgiris Indian Dry Gin, named for the Blue Mountains of the Western Ghats, whose botanicals are sourced at 7,000 feet: juniper, coriander, lemongrass, angelica, orris root, cinnamon, mace, nutmeg, and tea, macerated and distilled in copper pot stills in Bangalore. For this limited edition, the finished gin matures first in ex-bourbon casks, then finishes for a few months in a combination of peated and unpeated Amrut casks — the same barrels that produce the award-winning whiskies — before being blended and married for nearly as long as it aged, bottled at 42.8% ABV. Tastings found a brilliant straw color with vanilla, ginger, honey, lemon pepper, pipe tobacco, butterscotch, and candied orange, a velvety, crisp, dry body, and a warming finish of butterscotch, sea-salted caramel, honey, clove, black pepper, English breakfast tea, and sesame candy — calling it a gin for Scotch drinkers, with the juniper and botanicals present but the barrel and honeyed notes deliciously prominent.
