Heaven's Door Straight Rye Whiskey is the rye from Heaven's Door Spirits, the whiskey brand co-founded by Bob Dylan, with a finish you will not find anywhere else in American rye. The base is a sourced straight rye made from a 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash and aged about six years, which is then finished for roughly a year in toasted cigar barrels made from Vosges oak, air-dried in the mountains of France, before bottling at 92 proof.
Vosges oak has a looser grain than American oak, so it gives up its flavor faster, and the toasted cigar-barrel shape adds to the effect. Breaking Bourbon rated it 3.5 out of 5, finding vanilla custard, allspice, pepper, caramel and aged oak on the nose, graham cracker, oak, rye spice and brown sugar on the palate, and a finish that moves from rye spice into toasted marshmallow and vanilla, praising how the finish balances the high-rye spice with sweetness. The brand adds orange peel and coriander. It is a smooth, sippable rye with real character, and the Dylan-designed bottle looks good on a shelf.
