Heaven's Door started with a trademark filing. In 2015, Marc Bushala — fresh off selling Angel's Envy to Bacardi — noticed that Bob Dylan had registered the name "Bootleg Whiskey," and became fascinated by the idea that Dylan wanted to own anything at all. He and partner Ryan Perry approached the musician, and the brand launched in 2018 under a name borrowed from Dylan's 1973 classic "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." The premise, per Bushala, was that a single whiskey didn't make sense for an artist this prolific — so the team trialed over 100 blends before settling on a core range: a Straight Rye, a Double Barrel Whiskey, and a Tennessee Straight Bourbon, with the bottles decorated in Dylan's own ironwork designs. Master Distiller Ken Pierce and blender Alex Moore oversee production, and the brand now operates its own distillery in Pleasureville, Kentucky, with a showcase in a restored church in Louisville. The collector's obsession is the Bootleg Series, named for Dylan's 17-volume archive of rare recordings: annual cask-strength releases in hand-crafted ceramic bottles bearing Dylan paintings, housed in leather journals — Volume I was a 26-year-old finished in Mizunara, Volume V an 18-year bourbon finished in Spanish vermouth casks that UPROXX called the best bottle the brand has released. The Robb Report named Heaven's Door one of the best bourbons of the 21st century. Far from a celebrity cash-in.
